The Wally fleet of iconic sailing yachts grows, continuing a pedigree of excellence and performance of the Wally DNA.
Monaco, 22 April 2021 – After the successful delivery of its 145-footer last year, Wally is proud to announce the sale of a 101-foot fully custom sailing yacht to a passionate loyal client. Having previously built three vessels with Wally, the experienced European owner enjoys using his yachts for a combination of family cruising and racing on the Wally Class circuit as well as many other regattas, always with great success. This fourth yacht is inspired by the celebrated Wallycento box-rule design and its maxi racer potential along with comfortable cruising.
“The sale of this new cutting-edge Wally sailing yacht marks a red letter day for the entire Ferretti Group,” states Alberto Galassi, CEO of Ferretti Group. “We are extremely glad for the confidence and the enthusiasm this experienced and selective owner is putting in us once again and his new stunning vessel, which will combine the unbeatable Wally style and the latest technological solutions, the very essence of the Wally DNA ‘20 years ahead.’ This successful sale is thanks to the unique nature of Wally as well as the strength and reliability of Ferretti Group, which relies on Wally as a fundamental driver of growth and development. The Group invests and will continue to invest considerably in the brand in the next years .”
“This is the 48th full-carbon sailing superyacht built by Wally, continuing the company’s remarkable contribution to the advancement of sailing design and technology. It is also noteworthy as the first Wally sailing yacht to be sold since Ferretti Group’s acquisition of the brand,” comments Stefano de Vivo, Wally Managing Director. “Following the success of the motor yacht series launched in the last two years, this new bespoke project paves the way to a bright future for Wally and its magnificent sailing yacht fleet and Ferretti Group is highly motivated to continue this tradition long into the future.”
“When a client comes to Wally, they know they can expect the very highest standards as only Wally can deliver. Our yachts are renowned for comfort, quality and performance, and I am sure they will continue to lead the way for yacht design in the future,” adds Luca Bassani, Wally Founder and Chief Designer. “Additionally, sailing yachts provide the ultimate sustainable yachting experience, and our owners appreciate that they can enjoy a greener way of cruising the world, with less of an impact on the environment. It is very gratifying knowing that there will be another Wally sailing yacht on the water flying the flag for the planet.”
HIGH-PERFORMANCE POTENTIAL
Judel/Vrolijk & co. has provided the yacht’s naval architecture alongside interior and exterior design from Wally’s design team, led by Luca Bassani. The displacement of the fully-equipped superyacht is just 56,4 tons, almost 20% less than yachts of similar size and configuration, and with 40% of the total weight attributed to the keel. This achievement is accomplished thanks to the latest carbon fiber technology pioneered and developed over the years by the Monegasque brand, using an advanced sandwich composite with pre-preg carbon fiber. The yacht will also feature the Wally Enhanced Hydraulic System comprising the double low- and high-pressure pump technology to further speed up sail handling. The lifting keel increases the draft from 4.70m to an extraordinary 6.80m, for unparalleled upwind performance. Developed for the Wallycento superyachts 10 years ago to improve performance even further, the retractable propulsion drive shaft reduces the drag by 5% which roughly translates into a 10 second gain per each mile sailed.
As a result, the yacht can easily reach 18/20 knots of speed in full cruising configuration, with only the main and jib sails and all the comfort amenities. When not sailing, the 425hp engine will provide a predicted top speed of 11.5 knots.
“We are very honoured to be designing the new superyacht for a very experienced Wally customer. The design of the Wally 101 is based on our very successful projects in the racing Maxi72 Class and the experience with the Wally107 Open Season,” says Rolf Vrolijk from Judel/Vrolijk & co. “She will be the next generation of high-performance cruising yacht with a high potential of winning race on the superyacht circuits. The naval architecture features a powerful yet easy-driving, balanced hull shape to guarantee comfortable cruising, combined with narrow waterlines, deep-draft lifting keel and a generous sail plan. The perfect blend of fast cruising and successful racing.”
The advanced High Modulus mast and boom and the EC6 rigging contribute to the new Wally’s sailing potential. With a sail area of 630 square meters upwind, the sailing set-up includes a bowsprit, a 110% jib, and a square-top main sail with twin running backstays and a deflector. As with every Wally, she is equipped with the pioneering Magic Trim, the hydraulic ram developed to integrate the Wally push-button sail handling system introduced in 1998, allowing handling of even the largest yachts with a reduced crew. As part of Wally’s innovations for easy sailing, this new 101-foot is also equipped with the Magic Traveler for the main sheet and the jib floating clew system with up/down and in/out clew position adjusted by hydraulic rams, both introduced with the Wallycento superyachts in the ever-continuing effort to improve the original Fast & Easy experience.
A FAMILY-FRIENDLY LAYOUT
The new Wally 101 is a high-performance platform that has been arranged with a family-friendly layout for enjoyment both day and night. The yacht’s deck plan features an amidships cockpit with a table seating up to eight and an aft sunbathing area for ultimate relaxation. The owner’s cabin has an ensuite bathroom and TV room, two further ensuite cabins complete the guest accommodation for six, and the saloon includes a living and dining area with seating for up to 10-12. The service area is comprised of a crew mess, laundry, galley and two ensuite cabins for four crew.
The slim deckhouse features the central skylight, introduced in 2004 with the Wally80 design to fill the interiors with natural light while enhancing the Wally inside-outside living.
LEADING THE WAY
Through the consistent introduction of advanced technologies and revolutionary design developed for the racing world, from America’s Cup to Ocean Race as well as in-shore circuits, Wally has changed the conceptions of what is possible on a cruising sail yacht. As a result, Wallys are the ultimate superyachts to cruise in absolute comfort and safety while also offering the pure excitement of speed. Drawing from experience in the regatta arenas, Wally yachts benefit from reduced displacement, a powerful sail plan and the latest naval architecture that delivers excellent stability and planing capabilities. The light displacement associated with the powerful sail plan means the yacht is easier to handle, ensuring the safety of family and guests on board. It also provides a superior level of performance in any wind condition, the vessel’s speed often exceeding the wind speed itself, thus rarely having to rely on the engine for propulsion. The latest naval architecture results in improved stability and less pitching and healing, conveying a pleasant ride for guests on board. Nevertheless, when bearing away, the yacht’s planing hull benefits from reduced drag reminiscent of turbo acceleration, as with the Wallycento generation. This enhances the pleasure of sailing while making distances feel a lot shorter.
Delivery of the new sailing yacht is scheduled for spring 2023, and she will be built in Forlì, Italy.
