On these pages, the X-ray of ‘The Flagellation of Christ’ (1607) reveals how Caravaggio’s first approach envisaged a different position and proportions
for the character portrayed on the right, changed to be more imposing because in this way it was possible
to highlight its aggressiveness more. Note also the Dominican friar, later cancelled, originally painted on the right, in the position of the executioner.
